Traffic calming was also part the design, reducing speeds and increasing protection of pedestrians. The building design included permanent dewatering techniques. Open space was planted with native prairie grass, promoting infiltration and reduce watering demands. Plant species selected for site landscaping are also hardy and require low-maintenance.

The design team identified a four-acre area on the nearby campus to borrow the needed material and avoided importing several thousand cubic yards from an off-site source. Happily, borrow area was leveled to create four new little league fields while saving the client thousands of dollars in trucking costs.
