Any person purchasing a piece of property should have their boundary corners and/or lines marked to lessen the chance of any disputes with the neighbors in the future. At times, this seems to be one thing that you wouldn't want to do, but to keep "peace" between landowners, it is best to know what is yours & what is not yours. When being a "prospective" land purchaser, it's a good idea to talk to the adjoining owners, if possible, to get an idea of what they know about the property lines. This way, you can find out any possible problem areas which would aid in your decision of whether or not to get a survey done or to back off from the land purchase.

A survey is usually needed when the title to land is being transferred. It is used to depict in picture form, the shape of your boundary. It includes accurate information about the dimensions of your lines with a description of each corner to be found there. It also shows the accurate area of the boundary usually in acres or sometimes in square feet.
Many years ago, descriptions of deeds were completed by walking the boundary of property and writing a description of the corners or markers used to identify these boundaries. Almost all of these deeds refer to a tree, rock, fence post etc. All the above phrases were actually seen in deeds that we had run across during the course of some of our surveys.
